A superbly detailed wooden sculpture of Devi Durga. She rides to victory on the back of her lion, her trusty vahana (vehicle), which earns Her the name simhavahini (‘simha’ is Sanskrt for lion). Quite its match in terms of ferocity and strength, she is seated on its back in lalitasana and looks straight ahead of Her with those beauteous, omnipotent eyes. She is clad in a gorgeous saree and multiple jewels are to be found on Her person, in keeping with the chhavi (image) of traditional Indian women. The Ashtabhujadharini (one possessed of eight arms) is a warrior-devi - in each of Her hands is a weapon of divine power, bestowed upon Her by the devas who birthed Her.
The prevailing symmetry and attention to detail on the part of the artisan makes this a select work of art. The organic medium of wood has been infused with a world of lifelike detail, such as the pleats of Her flowing saree and the stance of Her delicately carved digits. In Her anteriormost left hand She holds the trishoola (trident), reminiscent of Her husband Lord Shiva, and the right hand She raises in blessing. The crown and karnakundalas, in addition to the halo behind Her head, add to the divine glamour of Her countenance.
