[Westport, CT, 06/23/2021] The Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Health is a private group practice in Westport offering marital therapy to help couples strengthen relationships.

The United States continues to have a high divorce rate with 40 to 50 percent of marriages ending up in divorce, according to the American Psychological Association. There are many factors that lead to this outcome, and many of them are because of various personal differences and conflict rooted in internal and external factors.

Why Do Couples Divorce?

A recent study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) revealed that the most common reasons that couples end up divorcing are cheating, fighting, and a lack of commitment.

The researchers interviewed divorced couples intending to find out the reason (or combination of reasons) for their failed marriages. They found that the lack of premarital counseling and religious differences has been a contributing factor in divorces. Their finding corroborates other studies that said interfaith couples are less happy together than couples of the same religion.

The lack of support from families also had a negative impact on marriages. Conversely, a 26-year study found that the probability of a divorce when a husband has a close relationship with his wife’s parents is lower by 20 percent.
Domestic violence and substance abuse were hard limits for many of the respondents. Financial problems, immaturity, constant fighting, infidelity, and lack of commitment rounded out the top 5 reasons for divorces in America.

Settling Marital Conflict through Therapy and Counseling

The Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Health recognizes the good and the bad in marital conflicts. According to the practice, conflicts can present opportunities for growth and learning and even deepen the connection between couples. It is when conflicts cause a divide instead of unity that makes divorce inevitable for some married couples.

The center helps troubled couples achieve the former through therapy. Licensed marriage counselors give actionable tips on how couples can effectively communicate with one another. More importantly, they identify and address the root causes of conflict and other roadblocks to a couple’s intimacy, mental well-being, happiness, and peace. These, according to the counseling center, are necessary so that couples that have drifted apart can reconnect.
