The National Weather Service has declared June 15 through Sept. 30 as the official monsoon season in Arizona. A monsoon storm can be a minor dust storm, or a large dust storm followed by heavy rains and thunderstorms. These type of storms account for about a third of the annual rainfall in the Phoenix area.
