Original Waterman is not only known for its quality lifeguard and surf gear but also for the company's dedication to giving back to the community.

Original Waterman is known across the country as the place to get quality watermen and lifeguard apparel as well as the very best in board and compression shorts. However, many of the company's clients do not realize that their favorite place to purchase apparel is also a company that regularly gives back to the community and strongly supports local business with a morjority of it’s products American-made.

The company, is known around the world for its lifeguard board shorts as seen at http://www.originalwatermen.com/lifeguard.html , no chup change here, Original Watermen gave away 22 percent of its profits in 2014 to local charities, including Urban Surf for Kids, Brother Benno's Center in San Diego and several junior lifeguard agencies who had members in need of products in order to participate in last summer Junior Guard program. Nearly one-quarter of the company's profits were used to help those who would otherwise not have had access to opportunities to learn about watersaftey, surfing, snorkling and current lifeguarding skills.

According to Leif Madron, marketing director for the company, "We started this company in the back of a VW camper van in the 80’s and we have not forgotten how great of an effect a personal touch can have to the products we are developing and delivering to market." Madron goes on to discuss how not just any effort can be labeled as having that "personal touch." "Just like the current 'green' movement and the illusion that big companies are now giving an 'eco' label to everything from blended gasoline to Styrofoam, mega corporations are marketing 'corporate responsibility' as a selling/branding platform to motivate you to buy their products. We at Original Watermen believe that it should be written in the stone tablets of business practice that the bigger a company grows the more responsibility it takes to protect and grow those working within it and also in the community from which allowed such growth to occur."

According to Madron, supporting local business is what makes America great. “Although we can’t make all our products here in America, we give it a very noble attempt! Small business is the backbone of this country, and our products made in California are what make us great. It is extremely difficult to compete with the mega corporations and their overseas production costs, but we value keeping the bread where it belongs, here in the great state of California. U.S.A. made products bear a badge of honor, and those who wear them should be proud to know that their purchases helped grow small businesses right here in our back yard," says Madron.

His ideas are echoed by Ken Miller, founder of the company and current president and CEO. "Original Watermen was built and continues to thrive on a community of like-minded water enthusiasts who actively strive to make a difference in the big details of our products and ensure the smallest detail doesn’t get looked over. Like a watermen who sails the rough seas on a custom-built boat, we promise to hear and consider every idea our customer proposes, because after it is all nailed together, it is the relationship between the customer and the company that keeps our boat watertight and our voyage sailing on. So, we thank you, the customer, not ourselves, for making this dream of ours a reality."

According to Miller, the Junior Lifeguard program in particular is an important project to those at Original Watermen. "Giving back to the water community is our mission as we are very heavily involved in helping Junior Lifeguard programs across the United States and into Mexico. We put 10 percent of our profits from lifeguard uniform sales directly back into the community to build strong programs that educate the youth on the wonders, dangers, and mysteries of the ocean. To help fellow lifeguards in the constant, selfless struggle to serve and protect the public from the danger of the ocean, we have served startup costs and donated equipment to protect lives and keep lifeguards doing what they love. Lifeguarding for life."
