Breast Cancer Treatment Methods

Dr. NeerajaDasari explains the different methods for treating breast cancer.

Texas, USA, Aug14, 2019 - Several breast cancer treatments exist, and the preferred method depends on the cancer’s stage. Most patients need a combination of at least two treatment options. After diagnosis, the doctor will establish the stage of the cancer. Thus, the best treatment method will depend on the stage along with other factors, such as family history, genetic mutation status, age, and personal medical history.

“The treatment option for breast cancer in its early stage may not work effectively for advanced stages,” explains Dr. Neeraja. “The stages of breast cancer are between 0 and 4. The factors that determine your stage include tumor size, number of lymph nodes, and whether the disease has spread to other areas of the body.”

Here are the most common breast cancer treatment options:

Surgery: It is an operation that involves the tumor removal and a small section of the healthy tissue (lumpectomy) or removal of the whole breast (mastectomy). Surgery also helps to examine nearby lymph nodes located under the arm.
Chemotherapy: It refers to use of special medicine to kill or shrink cancer cells. The medicine can be in form of drugs taken orally, through the veins or both.
Hormonal therapy: It involves the treatment of breast cancer that’s hormone-sensitive. The treatment works by blocking cancer cells from getting hormones that they need in order to grow. The treatment can stop or slow cancer growth.
Radiation therapy: The procedure entails use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.

“Working with a team of experienced oncologists will help determine the best breast cancer treatment method,” says Dr. Neeraja. “Doctors use various tests to tell the cancer’s stage. Imaging tests used to help detect the stage of breast cancer are MRI, CT scan, PET scan, X-ray, and ultrasound.”
