Benign Breast Disease May Signal Trouble Down the Road

Irving, TX, Feb , 2016 – Finding out that a breast abnormality is nothing more than benign breast disease is cause to celebrate, but it’s certainly not a signal to let the guard down.

“Researchers are finding that a rather commonly diagnosed benign condition, atypical hyperplasia, can give rise to a higher risk for eventual development of breast cancer,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. “While the findings don’t mean breast cancer is guaranteed to follow down the road, they do indicate a need for more careful monitoring.”

Dr. Echt was referring to recent studies that have shown a cumulative risk of future breast cancer that is 29 percent higher in women with atypical hyperplasia. The findings were based on data that had a 25-year follow-up time. That means development of cancer is not necessarily imminent or immediate if benign breast disease is diagnosed.

“Women who are diagnosed with benign breast disease should speak with their healthcare providers for advice about proper follow-up screening schedules,” Dr. Echt says. “Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can greatly increase survival chances.”

It is estimated that some 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. With early screening protocols and aggressive treatment methods, many women will find this form of cancer can be successfully battled. The key often lies in early detection, which makes heeding a possible link between benign disease and breast cancer important.

Women are encouraged to speak with their healthcare providers about screening tests. Mammograms generally are recommended to be conducted on an annual basis starting around the age of 40. Individual risk factors, however, may prompt healthcare providers to recommend earlier use of this test or others.
