Safety roof anchor points are an important part of a fall protection system. Fall protection anchor points are normally installed on the roof and are used to connect lanyards, lifelines, and other forms of tie-off which prevent a worker from falling. Roof anchors can be as simple as a D-ring connection or as complex as anentire lifeline system.

Workers working at heights must be protected from falls with certified fall protection systems; it’s the law. Adequate and dependable roof anchor points are the starting point for any roof safety system. But not all roof anchor points are created equal and not all anchor points are designed to meet every situation. It’s important to have the right anchor point for the roof type and the particular fall risk.

Placing 5,000 lbs anchor points on the roofs of your buildings is an OSHA requirement that must be met, before any contractor sets foot on the roof of the building. It’s important to take responsibility for the safety of all your employees working at heights; it is a moral and legal obligation.

Anchor Points must be initially certified by the owner re-certified every ten years or every five years, if the anchor manufacturer (e.g. adhesive anchors) feels it is necessary. This means they must be physically tested to OSHA required 2,500 lbs. (proof load) Thereafter, the anchor must be visually inspected annually, minimally by a Competent Person (or Subject Matter Expert) with records kept by the owner.

With PFAT, building owners and the property managers who represent them can get firsthand information about effective and accurate Anchor Point processes. PFAT recommends highest standards set forth by following OSHA 1910 and 1926 regulations, ANSI Z359 Fall Protection Standards, A120 Scaffold Standards, ASTM Test Methods, if available, and former AWCA I-14.1 Safety Standards.
