July 2021, Rocklea QLD — (https://www.pacificpetroleum.com.au/lubricants/phillips-66-lubricants/) Phillips 66 food-grade lubricants can meet the rigorous demands of today’s food and beverage manufacturers. Health and safety are the top priority of every food manufacturer and it’s a critical factor to success. Food contamination can endanger the health of consumers and can lead to a significant loss of reputation, a product recall or worse case — shutdown.

Large-scale food processing plants requires heavy-duty equipments and machinery to operate and a food grade lubricant must be used to prevent the risk of contamination when accidental leakages happen. Materials used to formulate lubricants for industrial applications such as motor and engine oils can’t be used in food applications for safety reasons.
With the advancement of technology, food grade lubricants such as oils, greases and fluids can alleviate this problem, extending the lifecycle of equipments by providing the protection it needs to perform safely, reliably and efficiently and at the same time eliminating the risk of food contamination.

Food-Grade Lubricant Categories
Lubricants used in food manufacturing fall into 3 categories: H1, H2 and H3. This terminology is used based on the likelihood it will contact food. Registration and approval of a new lubricant will depend on its formulation.

H1 Lubricants
H1 lubricants are also known as “Food-grade” lubricants. It can be used in applications where there is a possibility of an incidental food contact limited to a trace amount i.e., 0.001 percent or it will be deemed unsafe for consumption. This lubricant should only have the specified base stocks, additives and thickeners approved by FDA regulations (21 CFR 178.3750).

H2 Lubricants
This type of lubricant can only be used in a food processing facility where there is no possibility that it can contact with food. It cannot include substances that are carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens or mineral acids or intentionally heavy metals such as antimony, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury or selenium.

H3 Lubricants
This lubricant is commonly referred as soluble or edible oil such as corn oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil which is used to prevent rust on hooks and similar equipment used in food plants. Food processing equipment soaked on this oil must be cleaned by washing and wiped before usage.
