Patients With Polycystic Kidney Disease Could Benefit From Keto-Functional Foods

The ketogenic diet, a low-carb, high-fat diet, could assist patients with polycystic kidney disease. New studies have shown that ketosis, when the body uses dietary fats as energy, could have a positive effect on kidney function, especially in those with hereditary polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common hereditary kidney disease and makes up approximately ten percent of all kidney failures in the world. A study recently conducted included sixty-three patients with ADPKD, focusing on a clinical trial to identify if keto-functional foods could be efficient, safe, and feasible as a therapy for these patients.

The patients were divided into three groups, one followed a ketogenic diet for three months. The second group did three days of water fasting per month and the third followed dietary recommendations usually given to patients with polycystic kidney disease, which reduces salt and increases water intake to more than three liters per day.

Patients in the first two groups both found the diet feasible. Ketosis was shown in the measurement of eighty-five percent of the participants in all phases of water fasting. The BHB measurements were taken during intervention with seventy-eight percent of the ketogenic diet having higher values than before they started the diet.

Terry Kitagawa, the Nutrition Product Development Manager at Avela, said “The trial patients on the keto functional foods diet showed significant positive kidney function when compared to the other control groups. This was seen in a very short period of only three months. While the data is not sufficient to recommend keto functional foods to polycystic kidney disease patients, it is a very promising outlook.”

Larger studies are needed at numerous sites with longer follow-up periods to identify if the keto diet could be a useful tool for patients with this hereditary kidney disease. More data is needed to obtain the safety of the diet as two of the participants on the Keto diet developed kidney stones during the three-month clinical trial period. The keto functional foods diet should only be carried out if recommended by an experienced renal specialist.
