Diabetes is a health condition where the insulin production in the pancreas totally stops. In Diabetes, the glucose in the blood cannot be absorbed by the cells in the body. The most common diabetes symptoms are frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger and tiredness. The treatment includes taking insulin injections, making required changes in the daily diet and taking oral medications. Many of us may not even be aware that we are suffering from this disease. The reason for this is because the symptoms go unnoticed in most cases and are often associated with weakness or some other reason.

Causes of Diabetes:

The causes of diabetes though unclear, seem to have both hereditary and environmental issues involved. A lot of research shows that most people who are affected by diabetes have a genetic factor involved. There are two types of diabetes, Type I and Type II. Type I diabetes makes the body's immune system weak against infections. Researchers believe that the virus and the other microorganisms try to destroy the cells that are used to produce insulin in the pancreas. Type II diabetes is usually caused because of old age, family history of diabetes and obesity.

In type II diabetes however, insulin is produced by the pancreas but the cells become resistant to the insulin produced and hence it may not work as it is supposed to be. The symptoms here build up slowly such that the person affected by it would not even know of its existence. It is possible that Type II diabetes may actually be diagnosed by the doctor when the patient is undergoing some other kind of treatment. Diabetes risk is more in people who are obese, where diabetes runs in the family bloodline, people who have high density lipoprotein cholesterol, or to someone who belongs to a high risk ethnic race such as African-American, Hawaiian and American.

Symptoms of Diabetes:

The symptoms of diabetes either develop suddenly or over a course of weeks. Urine test and blood tests are usually conducted to diagnose diabetes. The urine test helps in detecting the ketones and proteins in the urine by which doctors can make sure how well the kidneys are functioning. A person can also test the sugar levels himself using a Blood glucose meter. This is an instrument that should be a part of the medical kit of every diabetic, especially for a person suffering from type I diabetes. Diabetes can be controlled with proper diet and exercise by the individual. If proper care is not taken, then it can even lead to loss of eye sight and at times even death.
