What’s The Complication Rate of LASIK Eye Surgeries?

Posted March 2, 2021 by Arizonalasik

The satisfaction rate among people who have had LASIK eye surgeries has been remarkably high. In fact, it is known to be the safest procedure that immediately corrects the vision.

However, there are some minor to major side-effects that come with it, which makes people rethink whether they should go for the surgery or not. Coming across some side-effects that are very common are the surgery. They usually last for a week or 10 days while some of them can still be there for a longer period.

As per the market scope, since the LASIK surgery was approved in 1999, more than 10 million Americans have had this procedure. Presently more than 700,000 LASIK eye surgeries are done each year. Though the satisfaction rate has always been higher, there are still some people who have to go through the side effects, which can last for years or can never go away. These side effects include starbursts, cornea damage, and dry eyes.

Recent Reports By The Studies of FDA

The recent studies by the FDA turned out to be very different compared to what news media has to say.

The major media outlet reported the complication rate of the LASIK procedures is 45%. But that's not the case.

The Prowl (Patient Reported Outcome With LASIK) studies by the FDA did not find a 45% complication rate.

As per their studies,

The first study found 75 out of 550 people had no indications or any signs or symptoms before the surgery.
In the second study by FDA, 68 out of 300 people were found with no visual symptoms before the LASIK surgery.
After around three months of the LASIK surgery, 32 out of 75 people reported, they came across at least 1 minor symptom.
Considering this, the complication rate remains around 6% to 8%, which proves the media coverage completely wrong.

Having said, if people want to increase the likelihood of not coming across the side-effects, they should ask the top Lasik surgeons or anyone who they trust with how good of a LASIK candidate they are, to begin with it. The highly selective patients and top LASIK doctors will eventually lead to better chances of the success rate of a procedure.

Alan Kozarsky, an Ophthalmologist who specializes in refractive surgery, cornea, and external diseases calls LASIK the second-best miracle after the services of delivery and labor.

What’s The Failure Rate of LASIK Eye Surgeries

There has never been a case where the LASIK has turned out to be the main cause of blindness. We would already know if there were any major problem with the LASIK. Studies may show evidence pointing out LASIK to be dangerous. But, in most such cases, their data does not exist, and further, they fail to justify their facts. Based on the latest studies, LASIK has a success rate of 96 to 98%, which makes the market still growing enormously.
