The Pleasures of Winter Gardens



From the gray days of winter, our gardens absence the most vibrant colors and intoxicating aromas of the other seasons.

But when you've paid attention to the"bones" of your lawn, winter is when silhouettes of trees and shrubs and dried seed heads or even vivid winter berries get involved. Woody plants with beautiful bark and intriguing architectural architecture may form the back of your winter garden.

Evergreens with vibrant foliage during the year come into their own in winter, if there's not any rivalry from green deciduous leaves and vivid flowering plants. Golden Hinoki cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa'Aurea', shows golden new expansion. Several types of juniper add colors which range from a rose-purple throw to silvery blue foliage. Oregon grape, Mahonia aquifolium, has wide green-purple to vivid red leaves which may light up the winter landscape.

Many anglers choose evergreens to add colour and feel throughout the year, but in the event that you intentionally choose deciduous plantings to match your landscape, then the routines of the branches are going to improve your backyard inside this season.

Among the best of them is that the corkscrew hazel, Corylus avellana. This Medusa mind of twisted branches and coiling stalks can grow up to ten feet. Coming in a close second is your dragon-claw willow, Salix babylonica, with its graceful spiralling branches. Another shrub with superbly manicured yellow brown leaves is Harry Lauder's walking stick, Corylus contorta.

Other shrubs and trees show interestingly textured and frequently colourful bark when the leaves have dropped. The peeling cinnamon skin of the paperbark maple or the glowing red shoots of this red osier dogwood add texture and colour into the darkened winter landscape. Golden weeping willow, Salix x chrysocoma, adds a glowing golden glow into the winter landscape that's concealed in summertime. For a little bright colour, plant a birch bark cherry, Prunus serrula, and revel in its own bronze-red bark.

Another way to add color to the winter landscape would be to plant trees and shrubs which game winter berries. Not only do these include glowing dots of attention, they bring winter birds, but which further enliven your backyard. Cotoneaster brightens up walls and hedges using its bunches of orange or red tomatoes while wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens, can insure the bare brown earth with its evergreen leaves and small red berries.

Maybe you have species of crabapples, Malus, in your lawn. Unpicked, the tiny purplish fruits will continue during the winter, feeding birds and adding even more drama to the lawn.

Do not overlook winter flowering perennials, such as hardy cyclamen, using vivid mauve blossoms or hellebores, snowdrops and yellowish or purple winter flowering crocus. A number of these blossom in late autumn, with chilly foliage, or in late winter, forcing flowers through brownish earth or spots of snow.

Others, such as heuchera with evergreen bronze foliage or berengia using its leathery green leaves, can add texture and color from the understory of your backyard during the year.
