An aerostat uses gases lighter than air such as hydrogen, helium, as well as hot air, which helps the aerostat to generate airlift. Aerostats include powered airships and unpowered balloons that are tethered to the ground. These are generally used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) purposes by the military forces and for tourism and civilian observations. An aerostat surveillance system possesses the long-endurance capability, which is not feasible with a fixed-wing aircraft. The global aerostat systems market consists of payloads such as electro-optical sensors, cameras, radars, and navigation systems. These payloads are cost effective as compared to UAVs.
