Chicago IL, 09-OCTOBER-2014 - The Center for Sleep Medicine is pleased to announce that sleep apnea relief solutions are available to local area residents who are suffering from the fatigue and other symptoms that go along with sleep apnea. The Center which also treats insomnia is a network of six clinics, constituting the largest group of its kind in Illinois. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been found to result in excessive daytime sleepiness in addition to impaired cognitive abilities and irritability.

According to a representative of the Chicago insomnia center, "OSA is characterized by a repetitive complete or partial collapse of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in an apneic or hypopneic event, respectively, and often causing snoring from upper-airway tissue vibration. People who are susceptible to OSA usually have smaller, more collapsible airways."

He continues, "Because the sufferer experiences disordered breathing during sleep one does not get the kind of restful sleep that is necessary for optimum functioning, he/she tends to suffer from daytime sleepiness resulting in a lack of focus on the tasks at hand. Although CPAP therapy is often suggested for individuals having sleep apnea, the Center also offers oral appliance therapy (OA) which may be a more appropriate and comfortable solution. An Oral Appliance is similar in construction to mouth guards used in sports or orthodontic retainers."

An oral appliance is used alone or in addition to other methods of care. Overweight patients may be strongly urged to lose weight.
