How TV aerials are becoming big broadcast business

Aerial and Satellite Express explains how TV aerial installation can work for everyone

“Many people have heard that a TV aerial installation can save them hundreds of pounds every year, but remain sceptical about the quality of reception and programming,” says James Mullen, Operations Manager for Aerial and Satellite Express. “However, many more are finding out for themselves that the system works and is improving all the time and they're happy customers.”

Thousands of Britons are moving towards aerial installation as a way to dispense with expensive monthly subscriptions and contracts with satellite providers. Free-to-air and Over-The-Air (OTA) TV is gaining ground with the number of available channels, picture and sound quality improving all the time.

“There are now over 100 free-to-air channels available in the UK with a wide variety of excellent new and specialised content emerging all the time,” says Mullen. “We're greatly encouraged at the growth of the free-to-air TV market and believe it's positive for both viewers and businesses. We're pleased with the progress in the industry as we're able to pass savings onto our clients.”

Free-to-air and OTA channels fund their programming and productions from advertising and endorsements, so the end customer doesn't have to pay for their viewing content. In addition, TV aerials obtain signal from local and regional television stations, offering easy access to important and interesting content that's also relevant to the region.

“It's not just cost saving that's encouraging the increase in TV aerial installations,” says Mullen. “TV aerials can offer a better quality picture and sound than many satellite stations. The reason is satellite signals are highly compressed and encrypted and need to be passed through a set-top box for decompression and decryption. This creates more potential for problems to occur.”

By contrast, free-to-air and OTA signals are not compressed and not encrypted and many are HD. “This means the signal that is received by the aerial is sent directly to the television set with no need for set-top boxes with decompression and decoding systems,” explains Mullen. “Locations within 70 miles of a transmitter can generally receive a high quality signal direct to their telly.”

“It's important to remember that reception not only differs from area to area, it can also differ between homes in the same area,” says Mullen. “The quality of the signal depends on environmental factors as well as factors specific to the property. These can include obstruction from trees or buildings as well as the placement of the aerial in the home or on the property.”

This is why it's best to call an expert local installer to conduct a TV aerial installation. Aerial and Satellite Express installers are all highly versed in the technology of TV aerials and satellite systems as well as well acquainted with the signal transmission in their local area of work, so they know exactly what equipment is necessary for every installation and how it should be placed.

“Some homes may get by with a sleek interior aerial tucked away high on a wall or window,” says Mullen. “Other homes may require an aerial with a larger surface area to be positioned on the roof or in the attic. What is important is not just the type of aerial, but it's exact placement and positioning.”

All Aerial and Satellites Express technicians are approved by Aerial and Satellite Express to provide expert same-day service. With vehicles fully equipped with all the necessary tools and equipment, they are able to complete a TV aerial installation and have the whole system up and running in a single day, allowing viewers to get on with just enjoying the pleasure of cost-free television.
