Roofing is the practice of covering the uppermost part of a building with asphalt shingles, concrete tiles or metal sheets.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Press Release) Oct 7, 2014 -- A roof is the uppermost part of a building, providing protection against the elements and privacy. The most important characteristics of a roof are represented by its surface and the material that covers it. Among the most popular roofing materials, we can include asphalt shingles, concrete tiles and metal sheets.

When it comes to small surfaces, asphalt shingles and concrete tiles are the most selected materials. Metal sheets, on the other hand, are perfect for extended roofs, as they can cover large areas with just the use of a single roofing material. Each of these materials has its own advantages, as can be seen next.

Asphalt is one of the most popular construction materials, being used not only for covering roofs, but also in the infrastructure, for roads. It is sturdy, recyclable and is preferred by most construction companies, because it is easy to fix, if a problem occurs. In many cases, it is combined with gravel, stone or sand for an improved effectiveness.

Concrete is another widely popular construction material composed of an aggregate material like gravel, stone or sand, and also cement and water. There are many recipes for creating the most perfect concrete, but no standard. People interested in a durable concrete need to combine its components in various percentages, until they find the right formula.

Asphalt and concrete are suitable for apartment buildings, headquarters, commercial centres, theatres, local and national institutions or other structures that carry a high level of formality. Metal sheets can be used on top of these structures, as well, but only if the structure itself is built of metal. If not, asphalt and concrete are more appropriate.

The most common metal sheets used to cover roofs are made of aluminium and are found on structures like garages, garden sheds, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, or animal shelters. Aluminium has the advantage of being a good heat conductor. Also, it does not ignite easily, which means that it is perfect for buildings where animals or people are found.

Besides these materials, people can also use ceramic, thatch, fibreglass, plastic or rubber to cover the roof of their houses, garden sheds or animal shelters. Of all the materials named here, fibreglass is probably the best one. This is a combination of plastic and glass fibres that is strong, lightweight, and fairly cheap.

When choosing a material for a roof, people need to take into consideration not only its price, but also the style of the building whose roof they want to cover with that material, the surface that has to be covered, and also the team of professionals that will undertake the job of laying the material.
