-- Gina Eubank, the founder of Living Nutrilicious and "America's Favorite Pharmacist," regularly shares her wisdom on living a healthy lifestyle, particularly with regard to diet. Now, Gina brings her insight to controlling sugar intake with the easy-to-remember acronym C.R.A.V.E. and helps others learn to master their urge to eat sugary snacks.
Gina Eubank has been called "America's Favorite Pharmacist," and has appeared numerous times on television shows such as Great Day Houston, sharing her wisdom about diet, exercise, supplements and other health-related topics. Now, Gina shares her knowledge about one of the most difficult cravings to conquer: processed sugar.
To make it easy to remember the steps to controlling sugar cravings, Gina has invented the new acronym C.R.A.V.E. Each letter stands for a different aspect of controlling cravings for foods containing processed or refined sugar and can help those who want to cut down on sugar intake.
"The letter C stands for cocaine," says Gina. "It is important to remember that sugar and cocaine work on the same receptors in the brain. Brain scans conducted on people who consume sugar show the scans 'lighting up' in the same way as people who are using cocaine. Therefore, eating sugar can, indeed, cause you to have cravings in an addictive fashion."
According to Gina, R stands for review the food labels to learn where sugar is hiding. Many items such as salad dressing, spaghetti sauce, ketchup, barbecue sauce and many other sauces have hidden sugars.
A stands for addiction. Sugar withdrawal can create very real symptoms such as moodiness, headaches, fatigue, achiness and sweating in some cases. Individuals who are cutting out sugar should be aware that they may face some difficult first days in their battle, but that these feelings will diminish quickly. Drink 1.5L-3L of water and gently walking for 20 minutes to stimulate your lymphatic system will help your body move more quickly through this phase. You can also take a bath with 1 cup Epsom salt and soak for 20 min to also draw out the toxins and to help relax your nervous system and muscles.
V stands for victory. "It is important for individuals to celebrate every step of progress in becoming sugar-free," says Gina. "Failure to reward yourself with progress can result in slumps and the temptation to go back to sugar. Celebrate with friends, or watch a movie or treat yourself in some other way besides a food reward. Take a moment and savor all the extra energy you have and how much better you feel."
Finally, E stands for educate. "It is important to educate friends and family so that they are aware of your no sugar journey and why it is important to you so they will not tempt you with sugary snacks," says Gina. She suggests having an honest discussion with loved ones about the science for avoiding sugar and, if possible, enlisting the help of a "buddy" for support.
