The current investments by the Government for better connectivity and improving the transport sector is expected to change the dynamics of trade in the region. 35,000 km of railway network is to be added in the Middle East region in the next five years and Saudi Arabia's main sea ports constitutes to the regions largest port network. To introduce and incorporate intermodal transport in different industries without difficulties, the GCC Intermodal Transport Summit commenced on 26th November 2013 at Jeddah Marriott Hotel, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The first day of the summit started off with a presentation on the Smart Inland Ports for Integrated Sea Ports Logistics by Eng. Ashraf M. A regulatory panel discussion on standardization of regulations within the region to enable improvements in logistic efficiency was lead by representatives from Saudi Rail Commission, Saudi Ports Authority (SEAPA), Road Transport Authority and Ministry of Works Bahrain. It helped the attendees understand the need to standardize regulations within the country and the region.

Ian Smith from Saudi Rail Commission who delivered his presentation on developing the Saudi rail network for the carriage of goods during a pre-summit interview stated, " It is important that customers and forwarders are aware that the Saudi railway system is growing, especially around major ports and industrial cities, and that rail operators can offer them a competitive service. The Saudi Railway Organisation, for example, is currently experiencing highly positive growth in the demand for its intermodal services. Within the industry our job right now is to ensure that the railways being built can join seamlessly together to form a modern, high quality network stretching from Muscat to Kuwait with connections to Riyadh, Jeddah and elsewhere."

The day concluded with a panel discussion on key challenges faced by intermodal players in the Middle East region with Khaled Ahmed from Economic Zones World, Edwin Lammers of Sohar Industrial Port Company and Peter Scholten from Saudia Cargo.
