Dakota Dental Reminds Patients of the Importance of Oral Cancer Screenings

Prevent deadly oral cancer with regular oral health screenings from Dakota Dental.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Press Release) Sep 26, 2014 -- Apple Valley, MN, September 25, 2014 - To many, the word “cancer” strikes fear in their hearts – except when hearing a diagnosis of oral cancer, as it is often viewed as a milder form of the disease. Unfortunately, this view could be deadly.

Dakota Dental, a full-service Apple Valley dental clinic, is reminding people of all ages to get a full oral health check up this fall, including an oral cancer screening. Every day about 100 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed. More than half of those diagnosed will die within five years, and one person passes away every day due to oral cancer.

Because an early diagnosis of oral cancer makes treatment more effective, the survival rate of those who find out quickly is about 90 percent. That is why it is essential to be screened. It is also important to take steps to prevent this deadly disease. Preventative care includes limiting alcohol intake, refraining from tobacco use and smoking, eating a healthful diet, and wearing sunscreen. If a person wears dental bridges or dentures, it is essential to make sure they are fitted properly.

Dakota Dental believes oral cancer screening is so important that the family dentists make the screening a regular part of a routine preventive dentistry exam. Though some dental clinics charge extra for an oral cancer screening, Dakota Dental’s professional check the entire mouth for pre-cancer and oral cancer at no extra charge. If cancer is present or suspected, further testing will be recommended.
