Blizzard has revealed some of its World of Warcraft plans for 2015, including an expansion of the Legendary quest line (complete with Legendary follower), improvements and additions to Garrisons

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Press Release) Dec 22, 2014 -- Blizzard has revealed some of its World of Warcraft plans for 2015, including an expansion of the Legendary quest line (complete with Legendary follower), improvements and additions to Garrisons, more focus on eSports via War Games skirmishes, and ongoing upgrades to character models. Perhaps the most interesting idea, however, is the possible addition of tradable tokens that can be used to pay for game time.

It's still in the exploratory stage, but the system sounds like it would function very similarly to EVE Online's "plex," an in-game item representing 30 days of game time that can be purchased or traded, and that makes large-scale EVE battles so wonderfully interesting by introducing an element of risk beyond that of normal games: A player with a hold full of plex faces potentially significant real-money losses if his ship is destroyed. It's doubtful that Blizzard would let things go that far, but it said players have expressed an interest in seeing something similar in WoW.

"Our current thought on this is that it would give players a way to use their surplus gold to cover some of their subscription cost, while giving players who might have less play time an option for acquiring gold from other players through a legit and secure system," Community Manager Micah "Bashiok" Whipple wrote. "We agree it could be a good fit for the game, and we look forward to any feedback you have as we continue to look into this feature."

Bashiok also noted that the World of Warcraft 6.1 patch, which will include some of the changes listed in the post, will be up on the Public Test Realm soon.

Thoughts from wow players

"Ever since its inception I've found the idea of paying a fee to play a video game stupid. Years later that hasn't changed." - Ohshiftson.

"I wouldn't have agreed with you 8 years ago. Considering the changes done to WoW since then and all the MMO's I've spent money on. I completely agree. It's not worth it, in the end. Hell it's not even worth paying full price for a new game without subscriptions. You pay 50$ that isn't a deluxe/supreme edition and miss out on skins and extra missions that could of been added without the extra fee. Gaming industry is a dishonest monster right now." - Justin Mavis.

"I already pay people in WoW 15k gold every month to send me a gift 30 day subscription from the blizzard store by mail. My Garrison makes me 15-16k/month SELF-SUSTAINED, all I have to do is tell me NPCs to work on more orders and go on missions, then sell or reap my profits. If I had more than one max level character this would easily mean 30k/month.

Every month I get a ton of people saying they reported me but it's been a year and I've never been banned for it." - 420shizzle.

"Technically it is against the terms of use, and IS a bannable offense. However, for the most part from what I've seen its one of those "we reserve the right to penalize you for this" kinda things.

Just be exceedingly careful with whom you trade with, if you want to keep doing that. If anything goes wrong, you dont get your gold back.

I'm curious, are you doing this with a friend, of sorts, someone you trust, or just random joe schmoe's in tradechat?" - Corrie Kay.

"This is fantastic news for me as I have lost interest in the game so much over the last few years but i'm still subbed and was considering canceling I have 1.2 million gold sitting in the bank so at least now I can spend it on something practical" - tony.

"Current gold farmers rate is about 2K/$, so I hope Blizzard makes the rate 5K/$ which means 75K for every 30days of playtime. At the same time, introduce excellent vendor items that are only a few K each.

What this will do is suck out all the farmed gold in the economy, make it too difficult for farmers to compete with Blizzard's rate, and make it so no one will pay inflated prices for good items, killing off the need to buy gold in the first place.

I'm a jerk who just wants to put all those Chinese farmers out of business. It was never a legitimate business anyway. It would do the world a favor by freeing poor kids from exploitation and slavery." - Huilun02.

"If it happens Blizzard is going to be the originator of the tokens. They will make it purchasable for gold. If Blizzard sets it at 75K, no one else in his right mind would sell it cheaper, because he would have to spend 75K to get the token in the first place.

And if someone who bought the tokens were to sell it for real money, it would be $15 because the token entitles you to the same thing as a $15 sub.

This would create a correlation between $15 and 75K gold. Any syndicate farmer would have to offer at least 75K for $15 (5K/$) or no one would do business with him." - Huilun02.

"gold already has worth to it we sell gold for real money and have in almost all multiplayer games for many year the us government has even taken steps to call gaming work and plans on adding a way to tax us for selling gold." - Jeremy Madison.

"Dear God I hope so. In fact, for the first time ever, I'm absolutely certain f2p is going to happen at some stage. I started playing Hearthstone yesterday and realised Blizzard must be making an absolute fortune with that particular f2p model. Love it or hate it, something like that's definitely coming to WoW." - Jamie Bell.
