On most every design project I will prepare a bill of materials as I create the design layout. On most projects there will be several Stamping Parts (XINGHUI) which are the custom plastics parts, but there will also be hardware, or gaskets, or labels, or fittings, or electronics, or stamping parts, and the list goes on. Starting a BOM side-by-side with the design layout helps to identify all of the required bits and pieces for the product but it also serves as the central information store.

The preliminary BOM should identify each part in the final product or assembly being developed. These do not all need to be listed at once, rather I tend to add them as I add them into the design layout. The quantity required per finished assembled unit should be identified. The initial selection for material should be identified as should the proposed process for making the part. Once the part is near completion in the design layout I tend to record the part volume and sometimes calculate part weight if I am secure in the material selection for the part. Any other special attribute for each part in the BOM should be listed as well; these might include surface finish, color, durometer, flammability rating, and the like.
