What is a PR card?
A PR card, also known as a permanent resident card, is an official document issued by a country to confirm an individual's permanent residency status within its borders. It serves as proof of identity and authorisation to reside and work indefinitely in the country. The specific immigration policies and requirements for obtaining PR status vary from country to country. Some countries, such as the United States, issue Green cards, while others may utilise different forms of documentation to verify PR status.

Who needs to renew their PR card in Canada?
Canadian permanent residents who have travelled outside the country for any reason must present their PR card upon returning to Canada. The PR card serves as an official source of permanent residency in Canada. If your PR card is set to expire during your travels outside Canada, it is advisable to renew it before leaving the country to avoid any complications upon your return.

How to renew your PR card on an urgent basis
Under certain circumstances, such as a family emergency, a business meeting, or an urgent seminar, you may need to travel outside Canada on short notice. In such cases, you may apply for urgent processing of your PR card renewal. Follow the instructions provided by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) for expediting the PR card renewal process.

Correcting errors on your PR card
If you discover any errors or inaccuracies in the information provided on your PR card, there are two options for rectifying the situation:

Apply for a reissued PR card: This option is suitable if the error is due to a mistake made by the immigration authorities or if you are certain that the information you provided was correct. You must apply for a reissued PR card within 60 days of receiving the original card.
Apply for a new PR card: A New PR card application is appropriate if the error is due to a change in your personal information, such as a legal name change, an update to your signature, or a correction to your date of birth.
Start renewing your permanent resident card no less than a half year before the expiry date for routine cases and one year ahead of time for complex matters. It will assist you with staying away from deferrals and bothers. The PR card is a significant travel record, so consistently ensure it doesn’t lapse while you are away from Canada. If you must travel and your card is yet to be renewed, you can apply for a Travel Document to return to Canada.
