World of Warcraft Classic became something when Blizzard finally gave in subsequent years of gamers calling for a return to the'vanilla' adventure of Warcraft. Participants got their cure for years through various private'heritage' servers but when Blizzard purchased Nostalrius, the biggest of these to close its doors back in 2016, fans once more called for an official'vanilla' server. Blizzard finally relented and announced World of Warcraft Classic during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2018.
When World of Warcraft originally launched way back in 2004, it brought in a massive number of players and quickly grew to have millions of readers worldwide. Besides the sheer scale of this game, a large force behind the achievement of this MMO was that the world where it had been set.
Azeroth has been around since the first Warcraft: Orcs and Humans launched in 1994 and the subsequent Warcraft two games further built on the narrative and lore. Warcraft 3 has been possibly the most popular of those ancient games and introduced us to a number of the characters that would go on to play huge roles in World of Warcraft, including Sylvanas Windrunner, Jaina Proudmore, along with Arthas Menethil, among others.
So when World of Warcraft launched in 2004, each of the lore, history, and locations that had been laid out in the earlier Warcraft games were attracted to life in Blizzard's vast MMO.
If you've just got a couple of hours each week to dedicate to a MMO, Classic may not be the match for you and you may be better off considering modern Warcraft to fill this Azeroth-shaped hole. That being said, if you're not particularly concerned with endgame content like raiding or max-level dungeons and only want to explore Azeroth because it was in 2006 then by all means, carry on. But if you would like to enjoy everything that Classic offers, then you need to be ready to devote a great deal of time not just levelling your character but completing various Attunement quests and grinding standing to get some of those late-game cases.
World of Warcraft Classic doesn't have these quality-of-life improvements that you may be accustomed to in contemporary Warcraft - or really many other current MMOs. For starters, the climbing of enemies is a lot less pliable and you may find yourself becoming rapidly overwhelmed it you take on over two enemies at once without preparation. Travelling from one place to another in Classic Azeroth can be far more time consuming - flight points aren't as plentiful as they are nowadays and with in-game gold not as readily come by, you may find yourself struggling to save even buy your first Riding Skill and mount.
