West Country Windows, one of the South West’s leading window companies, has been running through the history of composite front doors and explaining to prospective customers why they often make for the ideal replacement door. Just 15 years ago the choices available to British homeowners were narrow and unimaginative, with limited colours. Windows and doors came in white, light or golden oak, rosewood or mahogany. The latter would gradually disappear from the market due to its relative unpopularity.

Back in those days, consumers had a choice between uPVC doors or what is described in the industry as uPVC engineered doors – constructed using mid-rails and mullions in various formats. Since then, the widespread materials innovation has blown the sector-wide open, with vastly more choice for the consumer at every price point. Composite front doors first emerged in the UK in the late 1990s, but it wasn’t until much later – the time of the Great Recession - that they really started to take off, leaving their early generation uPVC predecessors in the dust.

Their propensity to add a much-needed splash of colour to a dire entrance door market played a big role in their fast adoption and their greater appeal when compared with the uPVC doors of the era. Soon composite doors were a massive force to be reckoned with and every supplier and installer wanted a piece of the action – not just because of the wider colour selection, but also the clever design innovations that were coming into play. Manufacturers developed a bolder approach, launching a wide and constantly evolving range of modern and contemporary styles.

When ancient timber designs were replicated in the composite door format, the industry hit new heights. Finally, the maintenance struggles that traditionally came with timber as a construction material had been removed, without sacrificing the charming aesthetic that most homeowners would strive to preserve. Now even a specific design of the handle, letterbox or door pull can add hundreds of pounds to the price of a front door. And these doors can usually be delivered within three or four working days, compared to several weeks in the early days.

It’s been an eventful journey so far – and it’s not over yet. We fully expect more innovation over the next five years and beyond, so we’re determined to remain at the cutting edge.
