Currently, The path to gain permanent residency currently will take about 10 years, although the Blue Card bill provides a quicker timeframe for farm workers who qualify as a special labor category due to their role in the food production and processing for the nation. However, the Blue Card, like other Visas, are just temporary fixes. Applying and obtaining citizenship will still require expensive fees, background checks, fines and most of all... waiting.
The true benefit of the Blue Card, are the farms and agricultural companies that need immigrant labor in order to continue meeting their goals in a manner that is legal compliance with state and local governments. It solves the ethical dilemna of farmers who wish to wish undocumented workers and are concerned with the liability to their organizations. The Blue Card is a good first step to bring to light, those workers who work in the much needed agricultural sector of our nation. However, much more reform is needed in order to keep immigrants in our country in a manner that reflects true and expedient reform. Future reform must embrace the larger immigration population to the benefit of the agricultural industry as well as protecting the human rights of the workers themselves.
