The Global Viral Inactivation Market was worth USD 350 million in 2016 and estimated to be growing at a CAGR of 12.7%, to reach USD 640 million by 2021. Viral Inactivation is the procedure in which viral cells are killed or made inactive. This procedure is primarily performed in order to enhance the safety and to prevent viruses in the sample from contaminating the desired product. The virus may be present in the final product, but in an inactive form. The range of inactivation techniques are performed chiefly in food and blood plasma industries to protect them from viral activity.

Some of the methods in which Viral Inactivation is achieved are treating with dry heat, decreasing the pH all the way till 4, solvent/detergent usage, irradiation by UV rays and pasteurization among others. Viral Inactivation by using solvents and detergents is the most used in the blood plasma industry, however it is effective only for viruses enveloped by lipid molecules. The detergents/solvents interacts with the lipid molecules in which viruses are present, thus rendering them ineffective as they cannot survive without lipid molecules. Pasteurization is effective when the proteins which are to be protected are more thermally resistant than the viruses. Similarly, lowering pH is effective when the molecules which are to be protected are more resistant than viruses. UV radiations cause damage to DNA of living cells by creating nucleic acid dimers, thus affecting life cycle and reproduction processes.

The Global Viral Inactivation market is driven by factors like focus of research and development industries in life sciences and swift growth in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology industries, rise of chronic diseases, rising support of government in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals sectors and launch of new drugs among others. However the market is restrained by less number of skilled workers and incidence of strong consolidation.

The Global Viral Inactivation market is segmented on the basis of method, product, application and end-user. Based on method, the market is segmented into solvent/detergent method, pasteurization, UV radiation, microwave heating and high-energy light. The largest market share is held by solvent/detergent method since it requires less investment, easy to use and it achieves high degree of inactivation of viruses. Based on product the market is divided into services, kits and reagents, accessories and viral inactivation systems. With respect to application, the market is fragmented into vaccines and therapeutics, stem cell products, cell culture, gene therapy and blood & blood products. Vaccines and therapeutics has the largest share in this segment. Based on end-users, the market is segmented into academic institutions, research organizations, pharmaceutical companies and others.

The Global market for Viral Inactivation is geographically segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa. North America has the largest market share in the world, while the Asia-Pacific region is fastest growing region in the world. Factors such as rising incidence of chronic diseases, increasing support of government in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology industry and swift growth in them are expected to propel the growth of this market globally.

Some of the major players in the market include Clean Cells, Charles River Laboratories International Inc, Danaher Corporation, Merck KGaA, Parker Hannifin, Red Source Technologies, Sartorius AG, SGS S.A, Texcell Inc, Viral Inactivated Plasma Systems SA, and Wuxi Pharma Tech Inc
