In the spirit of helping others, the Center for Hospice Care calls for volunteers to help improve the quality of its residents’ lives.

[SOUTH BEND, 2/19/2018]—The Center for Hospice Care helps residents make the most of their lives through various programs. It offers compassionate hospice and palliative care, as well as special programs for patients affected by heart and lung diseases and Dementia.
Although the center has a team of competent professionals, it still calls for volunteers to help give its residents a better experience. Volunteering helps both the patients and the volunteers, after all.

Volunteering Allows for Mental and Physical Well-Being

Volunteering works wonders for mental wellness. The Harvard Health Publishing’s blog says that volunteers feel more socially connected, so they’re less likely to feel lonely or develop depression. HelpGuide.org, a digital mental health resource, adds that volunteering keeps people mentally simulated and provides a sense of purpose, contributing to one’s mental well-being.

The benefits extend to one’s physical health. A study published in the journal Psychology and Aging found that adults who volunteered regularly had lower chances of developing high blood pressure. Rodlescia Sneed, the lead author, says that volunteering increases physical activity, lowering blood pressure. She adds that the activities helped reduce stress, and, consequently, improved physical health.

Volunteering for the Center for Hospice Care

Other than improving one’s health, volunteering also benefits those who receive the care. This is central to the Center for Hospice Care’s volunteer program. It is continually looking for compassionate souls who have the desire to help others.

The center does not leave volunteers to their own devices, though. It trains its volunteers, so they can help the residents to the best that they can. The training program focuses on hospice philosophy, communication skills, family dynamics, bereavement, patient care, and more. Through this training, volunteers will be prepared to serve and improve the lives of residents.
