It is surprising that glass is made from sand. Can you correlate between the two, sand and glass? Sand particles getting converted into hard glass surfaces is a miracle of science and nothing else.

It is surprising that glass is made from sand. Can you correlate between the two, sand and glass? Sand particles getting converted into hard glass surfaces is a miracle of science and nothing else. And those of us that we use stoves at home know the value of stove glass. And you may also be aware of the fact that the glass used in stoves is not ordinary glass but heat glass.

There is difference between ordinary glass and heat glass. Ordinary glass is made by mixing various elements like silicon dioxide, sodium carbonate, lime and some other minerals. This type of glass is commonly known as soda lime glass. While this glass is suitable for many purposes it certainly cannot be used as stove glass.

Heat glass was first made by Otto Schott, a German chemist. He is the inventor of borosilicate glass (as this type of glass is called) and he created this glass by mixing boron with soda lime glass. This form of glass is suitable for stoves because it has lower thermal expansion coefficient than soda lime glass. This means that it expands less when exposed to heat. Additionally this form of glass is also stronger and has a higher melting point, things that are essential in stove glass.

But today there is another popular form of glass that is used in stoves and it is known as glass ceramic. Glass is treated with heat until crystals begin to form in it. By changing the amount of crystal formation different types of glasses with different thermal expansion coefficients can be created. Depending upon the requirement these various types of glasses with varying melting points can be used. So, heat glasses with the highest melting points are used as fire resistant glasses. These glasses may not be required in standard stoves that we use at home.

After having discussed so much about glass I ought to tell you where glass is required in a stove. Stove glass is used in the door of the stove. Like in any other form the glass is inserted into the groove in the frame. Along with the glass a gasket is also used to ensure that the combustion chamber is properly sealed. A sealed combustion chamber produces heat more efficiently and also keeps the stove safe for the people at home.

However, there is one very important point about the glass that is used in stoves. It is glass after all and after prolonged exposure to heat it will develop those cracks. In the beginning the cracks will be slight but they are bound to expand with time. This is when you need to replace it. For buying replacement glass for your stove you can use an online store. You can look in the catalogue or search in the website.

This is more or less what you need to know about stove glass. Heat glass is essential for your stove and you should never compromise on its quality. Buy from proper stores only.
