In the final year of the UN's International Decade for Action 'Water for Life' 2005 - 2015, under the theme 'Water and Sustainable Development', 2015 is dedicated to the role water plays in strengthening social, economic and environmental systems. Prudent initiatives undertaken by ministries across the region, such as the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy’s Demand Side Management Executive Committee, who recently concluded their annual meeting, has resulted in a three per cent savings in water use in 2014, exceeding the targets set for the year. While most GCC authorities have laid road maps for socio- economic and developmental sustainability, a multi -stakeholder consensus to guarantee the availability of water resources for various uses to keep up with rapid development is the need of the hour coupled with policies and frameworks that propagate co-operation across all levels and industries.
Fleming Gulf's Annual Gulf Wastewater And Desalination Summit, in its fifth year, has become the primary summit for those involved in the field of water and its re-use to discuss, debate and align strategies to sustain this precious resource. Sharing his outlook for the industry and the summit , Dr. Adil Muhammed, Technical Advisor- Drainage Network Design Dept, Public Works Authority, Qatar (Ashghal) said “ The increasing demands of desalinated water due to rapid population increases and economic growth, poses major challenges and a need to expand the desalinated plant further and further. With the limited size of the Gulf and limited circulation, and brine that is dumped back into the Gulf, such expansion will pose a sharp increase of salinity. This is for sure a major source of concern. Furthermore, since the Gulf is the main source of fresh water due to the dry weather and evaporation rates being high, the reuse of water is becoming far necessary than any other time. From here comes the importance of this summit to discuss all the challenges and find solutions within the alternative mechanisms including the available of latest technology through the exchange of views.”
With a line up of speakers such as Ibrahim M Shirazi from National Water Company, Khaldon Khashman - Arab Countries Water Utilities Association, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hamyd Dawoud, Environment Agency, Advisor - Water Resources, Dr. Corrado Sommariva, Managing Director & Former President IDA, UAE and many more, Nitisha Sancheti, producer of the summit said "This years summit will feature a host of topics from challenges to technologies that are shaping the future of this industry. Our focus on regional development from a key stakeholder perspective will throw insights and initiatives taken by government authorities to encourage efficient re-use methods in a collaborative way."
