It is a sad fact that most of the money invested in moviemaking is centered on a few places. Hollywood is the de-facto leader in investment in movie making. Mumbai (Bollywood) is another hub of moviemaking where billions of dollars are spent every year. But movies go much further beyond these two places. Movies are made in all the countries in the world. We don’t know about most of these movies, but when we watch some of the best multicultural short films, we are simply awestruck. And it is not required that we venture outside the US. Some of the independent African American films that are made in the US are more than worth watching.

Why are movies made? There could be several reasons why someone would go ahead and make a movie. The commercial directors have two reasons for making movies – they want to earn a lot of fame and they want to make a lot of money. When a commercial movie becomes a worldwide hit, the producer and the director rake in millions of dollars in profits.

But not everyone makes movies because they want fame or money. The moviemakers are a strange breed, at least some of them. Someone may just want to narrate a story in the form of moving images and they go ahead and make a movie. Most such directors don’t have the financial backing of the commercial directors. They don’t have the best studios to shoot their work and their pieces of equipment are also rudimentary at times. But these problems don’t deter them. They grab any camera that they find and shoot their story. Many of the African American films fall into this category. And if you explore beyond the US, you will find plenty of multicultural short films that are made on shoestring budgets.

I still remember when in my younger days one of the TV channels would show foreign language films late at night. I didn’t understand the languages, but there were subtitles to help me. I used to be transfixed by some of these films that were shown in those days. I don’t even remember most of the names, but a few Japanese and Cuban movies were simply awesome. If given a chance, I would go back to those days and watch those movies. In fact there were some African American films of those times that I still remember. Sounder by Martin Ritt and Killer of Sheep by Charles Burnett are two movies that I distinctly remember. Of course, I didn’t understand the message behind those movies at that time. But when I watched them again, as I did some of the other multicultural short films, I could see how deep these filmmakers could think.

There are websites where the best multicultural short films can be seen for free. Get to know about some of the best African American films of all time and sit back and enjoy them. I can guarantee that you will discover a new side of movies.
