New York Dispensaries Jump The Gun On Lawmakers

The Latest Expansion In The Marijuana Trade Sheds The Spotlight Once Again On Laws Constraining Dispensaries

While these dispensaries are not entirely legal, the finer details regarding legalizing the marijuana trade are not stopping entrepreneurs in the state of New York to open their doors to the public. At this very moment, there are already several dispensaries open for business in the streets of the city. This trend is shifting the attention of the entire trade once again towards what is currently taking place in Colorado. As the state of Colorado was the first to legalize the use of marijuana products for both medicinal and recreational purposes, it is often the case that they are the poster child for the trade. Yet, while the recreational weed dispensaries in this state are now facing even stricter laws, dispensaries in other states seem to have gone rogue.
“We were one of the first dispensaries in the state to obtain our license to trade. While the restrictions to obtain such a license have already been severely strict back then, now almost a decade ago, local lawmakers are pushing even stricter laws at the moment,” says Brittanny Szalewski, the marketing manager to Rocky Mountain Cannabis.
What she is referring to are the latest changes that the local lawmakers announced to come into effect as the clock struck to announce the new year. These new laws changed the amount of marijuana concentrate that their clients would legally be able to purchase from recreational weed dispensaries. From 1 January onwards, all dispensaries are also obliged to hand their clients a pamphlet with every order, stipulating the risk involved in using the products. These pamphlets should also contain guidelines on recommended daily dosages.
“Another change is also affecting the paperwork involved in doctor’s prescriptions. In the case when a doctor would prescribe a higher dosage for one of their patients than what the legal limit is, our staff would have to scrutinize this paperwork to ensure that all is in order before authorizing the sale,” Szalewski says.
She also mentions that for roughly a decade, recreational dispensaries in the state had to be the example kids, maintaining very high standards to ensure that whatever they did was within the law. While this was challenging at times, they adhered to these laws to rid the industry of the stigma it had. She then expresses her concern over the fact that the actions of the dispensaries in New York might have the opposite effect and not do the reputation of the industry any good at all.
