Market Overview

Larvicides are insecticides used for killing mosquito larvae and pupae. The killing of mosquito larvae before they emerge as adults can reduce or eliminate the need for ground or aerial application of pesticides to kill adult mosquitoes. Moreover, larviciding can reduce the overall pesticide use in a control program.

The growth of the global larvicides market is primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, Zika, West Nile, and Lyme disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing over 700,000 deaths per year. An estimated 216 million cases of malaria were reported in 91 countries and the deaths caused by malaria reached 445,000 in 2016. The WHO also stated that Africa was home to 90% of all malaria cases and 91% of malaria deaths in 2016.

The other prone regions include Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and several parts of Europe. The adoption of the WHO Global Technical Strategy for Malaria by the World Health Assembly in May 2015, which provides a technical framework for all malaria-endemic countries, is expected to drive the demand for larvicides. The strategy aims to reduce malaria case incidences and malaria mortality rates by at least 90% by 2030. It also aims to eliminate malaria in around 35 countries and prevent the resurgence of the disease in malaria-free countries. The outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil in 2015 gained international attention. Prevention of such outbreaks is expected to drive the demand for larvicides in the coming years. Additionally, the increasing demand for larvicides in agricultural pest control is likely to fuel market growth.
