UK incidence information on diabetic retinopathy London 2023.

Diabetic Retinopathy is the most common form of eye disease found in individuals with diabetes. This is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the United Kingdom. Within twenty years of being diagnosed, almost all those with type 1 diabetes and two-thirds of those with type 2 diabetes will have diabetic retinopathy to some degree.

Gender and ethnic differences have been established worldwide. In the UK, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is shown to be 2.6 higher than those in South Asian communities, compared to the White British population. Untreated diabetic retinopathy can result in blindness and is the most common cause of vision loss in adults of working age, along with a higher risk of developing cataracts or glaucoma.

Since 2004, all patients with diabetes are required to have an annual screening for diabetic retinopathy. In 1987, the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), which was known as GPRD before, was set up. This is a commercial data bank run by Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). It is the largest database in the United Kingdom, representing more than eight percent of the UK population.

The database has longitudinal primary care records of over thirteen million patients with just over five million patient records being active. Observational data has been collected in practices for more than six years, providing over thirty million years of patient observation. Those contributing are registered in one of six hundred and fifty practices using vision clinical software systems. This provides detailed information on diagnosis, symptoms, test results, demographics, lifestyle and referrals.

Ray Man, the PA for Mahi Muqit, a leading consultant ophthalmologist passionate about diabetic eye disease, said “Research used this data, with personal information being hidden. This enabled researchers to cross code data focusing on diagnosis, symptoms and care processes. It provides the perfect database to investigate diabetic eye disease London based on gender, age and ethnic groups.

The clinical terms used to identify diabetic retinopathy diagnosis was agreed on between research teams and the clinicians at MoorfieldEye Hospital. Diabetic retinopathy was classified as severe in codes focusing on laser treatment, advanced retinopathy and preproferative or porliferative retinoathy. Out of the more than thirteen thousand acceptable patients identified, more than five hundred thousand had one diagnostic.
