Ophthalmologist London – Vitreous Humour Biomarkers Linked To Alzheimer's

Vitreous humor biomarkers linked to Alzheimer's, according to top ophthalmologists in London.

Mahi Muqit, a top ophthalmologist in London, advised that a study conducted at the Boston Medical Centre in the United States has uncovered a connection between vitreous humor biomarkers and Alzheimer's disease, along with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in post-mortem eye and brain tissue.

This research suggests that vitreous humor biomarkers could serve as an indicator for neuropathological diseases moving forward. The prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease continues to rise. In the United Kingdom, over four hundred thousand people were diagnosed with dementia in January 2023, 61.8% were sixty-five years of age and older.

Currently, diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy relies on clinical examinations, symptoms, and cognitive tests with confirmation possible through post-mortem brain examinations. Neuropathological chances for Alzheimer's Disease happen years before the symptoms start, which limits therapeutic effects by the time the patient is diagnosed. Being able to identify the biomarkers that can predict the disease before the symptoms start is an essential step in the right direction.

People with eye disease face an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease. Previous studies have established connections between neurodegenerative disorders and ophthalmic conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Patients with these eye conditions have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease.

Ray Man, the PA for Mahi Muqit, a leading ophthalmologist in London, said “The first study focused on the role of vitreous fluid biomarkers and linking it to post-mortem brain tissue. This study found a link between vitreous humor biomarkers and Alzheimer's Disease. This means that vitreous humor biomarkers could assist with early diagnosis in the future.”

The team conducting the research identified the correlation between the vitreous humor biomarkers and pathologically confirmed Alzheimer's Disease and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Altered levels of these neurodegenerative proteins in a vitreous fluid show that the eye reflects the neuropathological changes taking place in the brain. This reinforces the importance of investigating the eye's potential role in the diagnosis of these diseases.

This could see vitreous humor biomarkers being used in the future for the early detection of these diseases and improving treatment times.
