Acid Etch Graffiti Ruining Properties in London – But It Can Be Fixed

Regency Cleaning glass polishing removes acid etch graffiti at a fraction of the cost of replacement

Graffiti tagging, either acid etched or scratched into glass, is an unsightly addition to a store front or office façade. Unfortunately, this form of vandalism doesn't seem to be going away. Replacing acid etched glass panels is an expensive business, but there is really no need to replace when the glass can be repaired by expert glass polishing.

Regency Cleaning in London undertakes glass polishing across the Capital and South-East. Operating largely within the construction and refurbishment industries, most glass polishing work is undertaken to repair damage caused by heavy handed use of scrapers or carelessness from builders. However, a similar method used by Regency Cleaning is also capable of removing acid etching.

“Glass polishing is the most cost effective method for removing those unsightly marks that will almost certainly be found on every snagging list,” says Lee Gladden, Director of Regency Cleaning and expert glass polisher. “By using the correct compounds and techniques, scratches on glass can be polished away to a perfect finish with no distortion in the glass itself.”

Both residential and commercial properties can have damaged glass. While commercial properties are mostly the target of graffiti artists, residential properties have damage from irrigation overspray (hard water staining), building run-off staining, new construction damage, pet scratches and improper cleaning.

“Most people don't have their glass repaired because they don't know it's an option and replacing the glass is prohibitively expensive,” says Gladden. “However, these blemishes that block the view or create irritation every day can be polished off to make windows and glass furnishings look as good as new at a fraction of the cost of replacement.”

Scratch removal requires grinding the damaged surface of the glass to the bottom of the damage to create a new surface. In most instances, the damage is about 0.001” to 0.005” deep, or less than the thickness of a business card. Scratch removal has been around for about 25 years, but the science was imperfect until about seven years ago when the technique advanced beyond the need for water.

Using water during scratch removal and grinding on glass causes optic distortion in the glass or what is called lensing. This is because water spins out to the edge of the grinding disc, making poor contact with the glass and resulting in a central indentation that distorts light. These lenses create a distorted path for light and leave the window looking like a fun-house mirror.

“Removing damage from glass effectively and without lensing typically involves three steps,” explains Gladden. “First, we select the appropriate grinding pad based on the depth of the scratch. Deeper damage requires a coarser pad and grinding a greater surface area. Then we sand down to the bottom of the damage and proceed to polishing the surface back to clarity.”

The process is similar to sanding a gouge from a piece of wood, but requires specialised equipment and compounds and the hands of an expert glass polisher. One can spend a lifetime perfecting the art of removing damage from glass, but Regency Cleaning has mastered the skill and is confident of providing a reliable and cost effective service to homes and business in London and the South-East.

Domestic and commercial glass polishing can be carried out anywhere inside or outside a property, so it is possible to repair glass used in curtain walling, balustrades, partitioning, windows and any other glass structure to restore them to the expected finish. “Tick one more thing off that snagging list and get damaged class repairs in the most cost effective and efficient way,” concludes Gladden.
