Fast of Vat Savitri is observed twice in a year and has special significance in Hinduism. On this day, married women, for the long life of their husband and the bright future of their children, keep fast and offer prayers. According to legends, Savitri's husband Satyavan got a life gift under the tree of Vat, so on this day the tree of Vat is worshiped and a yarn is tied on it. It is also a belief that keeping this fast brings good luck to children.

Vat Savitri Fast is observed once on the new moon day of Jyeshtha month and then after fifteen days in many places. This year the date of Vat Savitri is falling on June 24. Full moon date starts - 24th June 2021 day from 03.32 am on Thursday, Jyeshtha month full moon date ends -25th June 2021 day Friday midnight at 12.09 pm.

Importance of Vat Savitri Vrat

According to religious belief, This vrat honors Savitri, the legendary wife of Satyavan who rescued his soul from Yamraj, god of death. Savitri, the daughter of King Ashvapati fell in love with Satyavan, the son of King Dhumatsen. According to his horoscope prediction, his life was too short but this didn’t stop Savitri from marrying him. After marriage, Savitri started keeping fasts and doing penance for a long life of Satyavan. Then on one sudden day when Satyavan was resting under a Banyan tree - he died. When Yama, the God of death, was taking away his body, Savitri confronted and refused to give her husband’s body. After many tries and requests Savitri still didn’t give up and hence, Yama offered a boon to Savitri and she requested for the well being of her in-laws. He granted her wish but she still kept following Yama. So, Yama offered her another boon and now she asked for the well-being of her parents. Even after the grant of this boom she still continued to follow him. Now to make her stop Yama offer
ed another boom and this time she asked for children and he granted it. But there occurred a conflict as to how it would be possible for her to beget children without her husband. At this point, Yama was taken aback by the dedication and devotion of Savitri to save her husband. He was pleased and restored the life of her husband. Savitri’s husband Satyavan gave up his life under the Banyan tree and was granted his life under the Banyan tree. Since that day women observe this fast for the longevity of their husbands and for getting children.
