Understanding Non-Cancerous Conditions that Elevate PSA Levels

Dr. Gregory Echt explains the many non-cancerous causes of increased PSA levels other than prostate cancer.

Irving, Texas – A prostate-specific antigen test helps to measure a particular protein produced by the prostate gland. Men with the prostate disease often have high levels of PSA. But high PSA levels may not be caused by cancer; other health conditions may contribute to the increase.

“Several lifestyle factors, testing inconsistencies, and health conditions can contribute to elevated levels of PSA," explained Dr. Echt. "In other cases, high PSA levels may be temporary and not a cause for alarm. It is better to talk to the doctor to explain these factors and also help you decide whether or not additional tests are required to determine the cause."

Here are some of the health conditions that may cause high PSA levels besides prostate cancer:

• Urinary tract infection – Urinary tract infection affects the bladder or urethra. It can make PSA levels to rise. Having urinary tract infection causes blood in urine, pain during urination, and one's inability to urinate. A urine test can help diagnose UTI accurately.

• Medical examinations– Medical procedures performed on the prostate can sometimes increase PSA levels. A recent prostate examination can result in false positives. This may occur after a urinary catheter in the urethra.

• Benign prostate hyperplasia – Benign prostate hyperplasia is a condition that occurs commonly in older men. It is an enlarged prostate which does not increase risk but can present similar symptoms such as irritation when urinating and raised PSA levels.

• Prostatitis – Prostatitis causes inflammation to the prostate. Sometimes it can occur due to bacterial infection and turn chronic. People with this condition can have high PSA levels and other related problems such as pain and difficulty when urinating, pressure in the rectum, changes in sexual function, ejaculation problems, and more.

"It is important to know that many conditions, including prostate cancer, can cause high PSA levels," continued Dr. Echt. “You should discuss the benefits as well as risks of taking the test with your doctor before making any decision."
