Dr. Echt explains the various types of surgery conducted on prostate cancer patients.

Irving, Texas - Several treatment options are available for prostate cancer patients. Each treatment is recommended based on several factors. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the prostate through surgery to avoid further spread of the cancer.

“Surgery for prostate cancer is often recommended after considering the stage of the disease, age, and overall health of the patient," explained Dr. Echt. “Not every patient will receive surgery since it can affect their quality of life.”

Here are the types of surgery performed on patients with prostate cancer:

• Radical prostatectomy – This procedure is performed on prostate cancer patients who are in good health. It involves removing the whole prostate gland, cancerous cells, and seminal vesicles. Radical prostatectomy comes in several types, including retropubic prostatectomy, perineal prostatectomy, robotic prostatectomy, and laparoscopic prostatectomy. This type of surgery is not suitable for patients whose cancer has spread outside the prostate.

• Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) – Transurethral resection of the prostate is a procedure that helps patients who have difficulty in passing urine. This occurs when their enlarged prostate prevents the urethra from functioning well by pressing against it. TURP can cause side effects, including retrograde ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and urethral stricture.

• Pelvic lymphadenectomy – Pelvic lymphadenectomy is conducted before radical prostatectomy to find out if intensive surgery is needed for the patient. Lymph nodes are extracted from the pelvis for biopsy to check for any cancerous cells. If found, the patient will undergo radical prostatectomy.

“Prostate cancer surgery can cause adverse side effects that may affect a patient’s life, relationships, and work,” continued Dr. Echt. "Medications are available to help them manage their condition. Some may be advised to take exercises to strengthen their muscles or undergo surgical procedures such as an internal male sling or artificial urinary sphincter to correct their condition."
