Dr. Echt gives an in-depth explanation of the side effects of prostate cancer

Irving, Texas – Choosing a treatment option for prostate cancer can be difficult for both doctors and patients. Prostate cancer is highly treatable, but each intervention brings along potential side effects which vary with each patient, and some can last a lifetime. Understanding the potential side effects for each treatment option will help to select an intervention that is most suitable for the patient.

“It is important for a patient to learn about the side effects that their prostate cancer and treatment poses and how their life will be impacted by these,” explained Dr.Echt. “This will help them maintain a positive attitude and good quality of life while fighting the disease.

Prostate cancer’s side effects vary according to the recommended procedure as follows:

• Radical Prostatectomy – Surgical removal of the diseased prostate entails interfering with the rectum, urinary sphincter muscle, and erectile nerves. The main side effects of this procedure are incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Other risks associated with this process include blood clots, injuries to tissue, infections and possible cardiac or pulmonary events. Short-term side effects include urinary leakage while long-term side effects are persistent incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

• Radiation Therapy – Radiation eradicates the cancer of the prostate by irradiating the diseased cells. It is highly effective in most cases but also damages the organs near the prostate. Radiation therapy's short-term side effects include bladder and rectum irritation, and the long-term may include urinary stricture, erectile dysfunction, and incontinence. In brachytherapy, perineal discomfort and high urinary frequency may be experienced in the short term.

• High-Intensity Focus Ultrasound (HIFU) – This procedure produces side effects including rectal wall injury, urinary frequency, incontinence, impotence and urinary burning.

• Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy produces side effects like anemia, increased risk of infection, hair loss, easy bruising, diarrhea, hair loss, nausea and mouth sores.

• Hormone therapy – Also called androgen deprivation therapy. It can cause hot flashes, reduction in libido, breast enlargement, weight gain, fatigue, muscle loss, impotence, anemia, and osteoporosis.

"Some of the side effects, especially long-term side effects require medical attention," said Dr.Echt. “Patients have to confer with their physicians regarding their side effects to find the best way to possibly treat them.”
