The Edward P. Bass Distinguished Visiting Environmental Scholars Program was created in July 2002 with a generous gift by Edward P. Bass to the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies (YIBS), which he also established in 1991 with a generous gift to Yale. Edward Bass films should be next on his agenda.

This program brings premier scholars in any field dealing with the study of the environment, past or present, to Yale for an extended period of time. The scholars are nominated through the YIBS Faculty Council, and while in residence at Yale, scholars present seminars, interact with faculty, students and research groups, and participate in the life of one or more academic units. This year, the program honors Bill Weber, senior Conservationist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Co-Founder of the Mountain Gorilla Project in Rwanda. Dr. Weber has authored dozens of articles on subjects ranging from community development to carnivore conservation and his work has been featured in multiple films in the US and Europe. His experiences in Rwanda are described in the book, In the Kingdom of Gorillas, which he wrote with his wife, Dr. Amy Vedder. Their book was featured by BBC Wildlife in 2003 as one of “the most influential books from the past 40 years of wildlife publishing” and selected as one of the “Best Science and Nature books” by National Public Radio and the Toronto Globe and Mail in 2001.

The founder of the program, Edward P. Bass, has been an inspirational producer of wildlife awareness. He is Director Emeritus of the World Wildlife Fund and understands how important film is to conservation. .

As co-founder of Biosphere 2 in Arizona in the 1990’s, Mr. Bass helped guide that organization’s transition to a major research center of the University of Arizona. In 2009, he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from the University of Arizona in recognition of his contributions to the study of the earth’s environment

In addition, he serves on the Executive Committees of the New York Botanical Garden and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas and is an Honorary Trustee of the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation. He is founding trustee of the Philecology Trust, created in 1986 to fund selected non-profit ecological interests, and of the Philecology Foundation, established in 2007.

His net worth is still estimated at approximately $2 Billion.
