The seas around the Cyprus coastline are already rich in shipwrecks, opening the door to some of the best shipwreck diving globally.

During 2014, the local authorities took it upon themselves to give the region a bit of a tourism boost. The easiest way to establish that was to expand on the reef by adding an artificial reef. The seas around the Cyprus coastline are already rich in shipwrecks, opening the door to some of the best shipwreck diving globally. These shipwrecks served as a source of inspiration when the authorities decided to sink two more ships in the area to expand on the existing reef and to create an artificial habitat for the rich and abundant sea life of the local waters.

Putting this decision into practice meant that soon the Constandis and the Lady Thetis ended up on the ocean floor soon afterward. The one has found a permanent home at 23 meters deep while the other’s resting place is on 18 meters.

“These two wrecks gave the local tourism a massive boost. Divers are keen to explore the inner works of these ships and the stories behind these vessels make for an even better tourism attraction. Our team always considers our mission as one which is two-fold. The one being to play a contributing role in the preservation of the local marine life and helping it to thrive and the other to provide visitors with a safe and enjoyable experience underneath the surface, allowing them to go home with the most magnificent memories of what the local waters offered them,” says Steve Theakston, former military man, and owner of Pissouri Bay Divers.

Much more recently, they sunk another ship to extend the artificial reef even further. “It was a very exciting day as we could witness when the Elpida went under on the 7th of December 2019. She lies deep in the ocean at around 30 meters just off the coast of Larnaca. The next day our crew was part of the first group to go out and explore her underneath the water. All these efforts do a great deal to help tourism. Thanks to the many wrecks in the area and the abundance of marine life which take on so quickly to their new habitat the waters are alive with possibility,” Theakston further expands about the diving opportunities of the local waters.

One of the best ways to explore the magnificent life underneath the surface is to let their team take you to explore the beauty of how ship and nature merge to form an entirely new ecosystem near the coast of Limassol.
