Utilizing CT Scan in Cancer Diagnosis: The Procedure

A Radiologist talks about the procedure for scanning for cancer using a CT scan.

Irving, TX – A computerized tomography scan is a part of medical testing where images of the body are taken to reveal detailed information about the location of cancer within the body. A CT scan can be taken from various angles to provide a comprehensive, cross-sectioned full picture of the bones and soft tissues of the body for individual or 3D examination.

“CT scans are essential especially when there’s need for a more detailed look of a particular area of the body,” explained the radiologist. “This allows doctors to detect the presence of various diseases including cancer, and also diagnose internal bleeding or injuries that may not have been detected. CT scans in cancer can accurately identify the precise location of a tumor for treatment to be delivered effectively.”

Here’s the CT scan procedure:

• The patient wears a gown and is asked to remove any metal objects or jewelry they are wearing.
• The patient then lies on a small table in a specific position that will allow for clear image shots to be taken effectively.
• The table will slide into the center of the scanner. The CT scanner looks like a large ring – a gantry. This gantry rotates around the patient as it takes all the images it requires.
• The patient is required to relax or hold their breath for a few seconds for certain images to be taken.
• The technologist will be communicating with the patient from the next room through the headphones or a small intercom.
• After the procedure is completed the patient does not need a recovery period. Only when they’ve undergone a contrast CT scan will they be asked to drink a lot of fluids that will help in removing the contrast material from the body. After reading the results, the radiologists will then communicate the findings to the prescribing doctor who will then advise the patient accordingly on the next course of action.

CT scans are non-invasive and painless. The procedure exposes the patient briefly to radiation, a consideration the doctor takes before recommending the procedure. It may be carried out with or without contrast – a dye that is swallowed or injected to allow clear spotlighting of particular areas of the body.

"The CT scan is a very quick, effective and low-risk procedure," continued the radiologist. "It is the most convenient way to provide the medical team with comprehensive information about the health of a patient."
