A Radiologist explains how Axumin PET scans are used in the early detection of prostate cancer recurrence after treatment.

Irving, TX – Axumin PET scan helps to achieve early detection of prostate cancer recurrence after radiation or surgery. PSA has been used to detect these recurrences but unable to find the location of cancer until the levels of PSA are very high. PSA levels rise due to cancer that has metastasized to the bones or lymph nodes. Axumin uses calcium-related radioactive substances in standard bone scans and concentrates on the areas irritated by cancer. It exploits amino acids through a linked radioactive tracer.

“Axumin can help detect recurrent prostate cancer even with PSA levels that are lower than 10, which is why it is a breakthrough for prostate cancer,” said the radiologist. “It helps oncologists to know the cancer recurrence location and its aggressiveness to provide better treatment to patients.”

Here are the benefits of Axumin PET scans:

It can detect early metastatic prostate cancer. Axumin can identify the location of cancer and guide effective therapy to the specific area hence limiting the damage to other parts of the body. The Axumin PET scan detects areas where cancer is not present and where treatment is not needed.

Axumin PET scan is accurate and offers profound insights into the process of the disease to reveal whether cancer has metastasized or not and if it has, the degree to which it has metastasized.

Axumin helps doctors to exploit the capabilities of IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) fully. IMRT allows doctors to accurately aim the radiation to the tumor location without damaging nearby organs such as intestines. That is why Axumin PET scanning makes IMRT more useful.

“Axumin PET scanning helps to detect small metastatic lesions within the lymph nodes with PSA levels of between 1 to 10,” continued the radiologist. “For men who have been treated with chemo-hormonal therapy for advanced prostate cancer, Axumin PET scan can help to single out areas of cancer that are showing persistent metabolic activity to help them get treated with spot radiation or other targeted treatments.”
