The Procedure for Undergoing a PET Scan

A radiologist explains the elaborate procedure for PET scans.

Irving, TX - Positron Emission Tomography, PET, is an intensive technique used in imaging that gives a great promise in the diagnosis and treatment of several diseases, particularly cancer. A non-invasive test, PET scans an image of the body's physiologic changes accurately. A PET scan incorporates imaging, together with a minute radioactive "tracer" absorbed into the body. It reveals any increased chemical activity in the body, which can indicate the presence of disease.

"A PET scan can effectively help uncover cancer – or ascertain if cancer has gone viral – since cancer cells are evident brightly during a scan. The instructions for preparations will be given to you by your doctor before your PET scan. One will likely have to avoid exercise and stop eating before the testing," explains the radiologist.

The procedure for a PET scan is as follows:

• Patients first have to remove their clothing and put on a hospital gown.
• A tracer is then given, which is a small radioactive drug that may be injected, swallowed, or inhaled.
• Once the tracer is wholly absorbed – which can take up to an hour – the patient is ready to begin the PET scan.
• Just like a CT scan, a PET scan machine has the shape of a large ring. The patient lies on a small table and gets comfortable.
• When the patient settles, the table itself will move into the scanner.
• The scanner then moves around so pictures can be taken.

"Although the procedure is painless, some patients may have anxiety linked to the loud clicking and banging noise of the machine or some claustrophobia if you become anxious in small spaces," explains the radiologist.
