The Place of Imaging Technology in the Treatment and Management of Cancer

A radiologist explains the role of imaging tests in cancer treatment

Irving, TX – Imaging tests are those that create images of what is going on inside the body. They do this by sending radioactive particles, sound waves, magnetic fields and other forms of energy into the body. Their interaction with the body tissue causes images of the tissue to form. These images are what doctors use to gain a better understanding of a patient’s health. Such tests include computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, ultrasound, x-ray, and positron emission tomography (PET) scan, among others. These tests have proven very useful in the treatment of cancer because they give images that help chart the treatment course.

“For oncologists to recommend any form of cancer treatment, they must be certain that there is a cancerous tumor. Imaging technology is easily the first non-invasive avenue to get such information,” says the radiologist. “Further tests can then be used to ascertain the findings.”

Doctors have used imaging tests for over three decades for patient management regardless of the stage the cancer is at. These tests arealso used for the following:

• Diagnosis – The first step is diagnosing a patient. Imaging tests help to detect cancer cells, where the cells are located, and how far they have spread. Doctors can then appropriately stage the cancer.

• Treatment planning– Knowing the cancer stage allows for proper treatment suggestions. Doctors can also restage the cancer after initial treatment in order to plan for further treatment.

• Evaluation of response to treatment – Cancer usually manifests on the inside and there is no way to tell the impact of treatment by looking at a patient. Imaging shows whether tumors are shrinking. The results can help doctors decide whether to continue with the treatment plan or incorporate another form of cancer therapy. All this is accomplished without invasive surgery.

“High quality and accurate imaging equipment is necessary throughout the treatment of cancer because they provide accurate development trends,” adds the radiologist. “Proper treatment relies on updated information for it to be useful.”
