The Unique Properties of Spandex Yarn

Spandex yarn has been around for a long time. Back in the Victorian times, women would knit themselves outfits out of Spandex, making them very comfortable in warm weather.

Today, you can knit your own clothing with Spandex, or even use it as the fabric of your choice when you make clothing for children or for yourself. Spandex is typically used in sportive or dynamic clothing, though some people also fetishize spandex as an everyday apparel material. Spandex was once fetishized as an outfit material by some people, perhaps on the presumption that the cloth itself behaves like a fetishized skin that glides about as a more fetishized proxy for the wearer's own skin.

The term Spandex comes from the Greek word "spondylos" which means threads. Spandex threads are made of cotton, hemp, nylon, and polyester. There are two general types of thread in relation to Spandex, cotton Thread and Nylon, each of which has various uses in the manufacture of Spandex. Cotton threads are frequently used as fillers or dyes for nylon threads to give them color, although they are also occasionally used as synthetics for polyester fibers, which is why the term polyester is sometimes used instead of cotton.

Spandex was originally developed for use in sports uniforms, often as a moisture-wicking fabric. That is what led to the name of compression spandex; the fabric could be woven into a tight fabric, but because it has little stretch, it does not have much give. Thus, unlike other kinds of athletic fibers, it doesn't wear out or develop holes quickly. However, that changed when the material was introduced to the automobile market. Auto shops found that a spandex-like product could be used for body panels, linings, and interiors as well as being able to stretch into a tight place when needed.

Spandex is available in a variety of colors, and manufacturers have developed various processes to make it come in more unusual hues. Initially, it was simply meant to be white or very light gray. It has undergone several chemical reactions in order to become stretchy, resistant to abrasion, and able to resist mildew and chlorine. Spandex yarns are often dyed with acrylics, resins, and other chemicals to create many different color combinations. In fact, many automobile dyes come from spandex yarn.

Spandex is usually sold as a treated woven yarn that contains a protective plastic layer on one side. That side is covered in either nylon or polyester. The most common type of this fabric is the double-covered yarn. A double-covered spandex yarn contains two layers: the first layer is a thin film of plastic, and the second layer is a layer of dyed polyester or nylon. In order to keep the plastic layer from coming into contact with skin, it is wrapped around the spandex using a heat gun.

The spandex yarn can be made into an extremely wide variety of products depending on its characteristics. For instance, a standard vinyl covering will have an exterior containing plastic and a polyurethane coating. If the manufacturer opts for a treated spandex yarn, then the dye contained in the plastic coating can come off during washing, resulting in a loose, washable coating. Spandex has several unique properties, which makes it ideal for a wide variety of applications. The strength and elasticity of the fabric allow it to be used for a wide variety of products, such as protective coatings on industrial equipment, athletic shoes, and snowboards. It is also commonly used for creating Velcro-like strapping and buckles, and even in forms of wristbands. Another unique property of spandex yarns is that they are highly resistant to heat and moisture, which makes them an excellent choice to cover swimsuits and other types of clothing that need to take a beating in order to stand up to the elements.

One of the most common uses for spandex fabrics today is in sports apparel. Due to the spandex fibers' inherent ability to wick sweat away from the body, these garments provide much better forms of cooling and moisture management than traditional materials. Other popular application areas include workout wear, casual clothes, and T-shirts. The high performance and flexibility of spandex fibers make them an ideal choice for all of these different kinds of applications, and the long list of benefits that come from using these fibers is only getting longer.
