Pain Management
“Chronic low-back pain is the leading cause of disability in Australia and will develop in around 40 per cent of the four million Australians who experience low back pain.”
Anyone suffering pain knows the debilitating affects pain has not just on the body, but to almost all areas of a person’s life.
Chronic pain is a complicated. Although pain is a natural and very useful neurological response, when it becomes over sensitized, it has the ability to stop you from completing the most basic of tasks. Tasks that do not injury your body.
Can hypnosis help?
As a treatment, hypnosis for the management of pain is widely accepted. There are now an adequate number of controlled studies of hypnosis to draw meaningful conclusions from the literature regarding chronic pain (Jensen & Patterson, 2006; Montgomery, DuHamel, & Redd, 2000; Patterson & Jensen, 2003).
“Clinical and experimental research literature indicates hypnosis is very useful for severe and persistent pain”. Additionally, the research indicates that a person receiving treatment does not have to be what is considered “Highly hypnotisable” (Holroyd, 1996).
According to NeuRA (an independent, not-for-profit research institute based in Sydney), Associate Professor James McAuley (NeuRA and University of NSW), hypnosis is a safe, drug-free method for pain relief. Chronis pain sufferers can be helped to reduce pain intensity, disability, and catastrophising of pain.
“The findings indicate that hypnosis interventions consistently produce significant decreases in pain associated with a variety of chronic-pain problems” (Elkins, Jensen and Patterson, 2007). According to the Arthritis Foundation website, “75% of people with arthritis and related diseases experience significant pain relief using hypnosis.”
However, it is important to note that hypnosis is not a treatment in and of itself; rather, it is a procedure than can be used to facilitate other types of therapies and treatments.
What hypnosis for Pain management is NOT
Hypnosis for pain management is not a placebo or cognitive coping strategy as it alters the psychological components involving the experience of pain and therefore, may then have an effect on even severe pain (“Alternative Pain Management | Hypnosis for Pain”, 2019).
How does hypnosis work?
“[Hypnosis] helps the brain to calm the noise of pain, providing a much-needed respite for the [client]” A/Prof McAuley (“Hypnosis transforming chronic pain treatment”, 2019).
How many hypnosis sessions will I need?
Hypnosis typically helps relieve pain in just 4 to 10 sessions but some people benefit faster and a small percentage may not at all.
