The People's Progressive Movement & Premier Alden McLaughlin launch election campaign Manifesto.

Cayman Islands, May 9th 2017

The General Elections taking place in the Cayman Islands on May 24, 2017 marks the first time that the Islands will utilise the one person, one vote and single member constituency system of voting. Moving away from the multi-member constituency regime that had been in place previously.
This change to the electoral system is one of several improvements brought in by the Progressives Government over the last four years and on Wednesday May 10th. The Progressives will launch their Manifesto outlining their plans for the next four years in Government.
In one of the main messages, the Political Leader of the Progressives, and current Premier of the Cayman Islands, the Honourable Alden McLaughlin noted that “Four Years ago our Islands were in a mess. The economy was stagnant and Caymanian unemployment stood at a high 10.5%”. At a time when Cayman needed strong Government, we were experiencing political instability and scandal. Government finances were seriously depleted and Government policies had proven ineffective.”
In the Progressives first term in office they brought back stability in Government; brought back confidence in businesses that allowed the economy to grow at an average of 2.5% per anum; and grew surpluses and paid down debt while reducing taxation. And Caymanian unemployment has been cut in half.
“We will build on the strong platform created over the past term, maintaining strong government finances and a healthy and vibrant economy, so that or three Islands will continue to grow as a safe, happy, confident, and productive society where Caymanians are able to take full advantage of the blessings and opportunities we have, to find good employment and to lead fulfilling lives among family, friends, and co-workers”. Declared Alden McLaughlin MBE, JP and political Leader of the Progressives.
Recent polling in the Cayman Islands indicate a very good lead for the Progressives and sets the stage for one of the most interesting political campaigns in decades.
In its Manifesto the Progressives will commit to a number of programs for the next four years in Government. Including the following:
• Within four years at least 75% of high school graduates will move on to post-secondary education - either academic or in a vocational trade
• Achieve full Caymanian employment
• Within two years create a Cayman Human Resources Authority that will be responsible for the granting of work permits.
• Access to better health care by reforming the health insurance market so everyone can access appropriate coverage at a fair price.
• Cut gun crimes by at least 60% over the next four years.
• Within 18 months of the term abolish 25% of regulations that hinder small businesses
Sincerely,
The Progressives Team.
