PRESS RELEASE 3/5/21 – ‘BEAUTIFUL EARTH’

The EP ‘Beautiful Earth’ by David Will Mitchell and Cole Toury, the prolific songwriting team, has just been released. They have created a timely and beautifully constructed ecology-focused album of songs, which captures the mood of the world post-lockdown.

The powerful image of ice caps melting in front of us, with a burning piano representing global warming, and the power of music to bring all of this to our attention – that’s the massive message of this wonderful EP. They have written songs with memorable melodies and lyrics, to be ‘sung by the wide world’, because they are passionate about the issues. They say they are happy if they scratch our imaginations a tiny bit.

Their usual lineup of Cole on keys/guitars, Monika on violin and David’s vocals, and their three-generation age range, have given this project multi-generational appeal. The 4 main songs are:

1. Beautiful Earth – focuses on the wonder of our earth, the sadness we feel as it appears to be under attack from global warming, and what we can do about it ……
“Sleep - eat - pollute – repeat (NO!); it leads to defeat ………
Plant – care – nurture – repair, ………… leave something spare.
Grow – aware - sustain – and care, and we can get there”

2. Catch the Fire– in a clear example of ‘global warming/climate change’ the ‘campfire’ forest fires burned down swathes of North California in 2018 – ironically including the town of ‘Paradise’.

3. Eco-Generations– anthem. The centrepiece of this EP is ‘Eco-Generations’an anthem sung by 3 different generations, with their 3 separate viewpoints. Cole’s keyboard sound is complemented by some great guitar sounds from Paul Miles, and Monika’s violin emphasises the gravity and solemnity.

COLE sets the scene vocally with “the absence of future has begun … Ice caps are melting”
MONIKAgives us the young person’s view “Climate’s changing – you stole my future.
What are you going to do to help me?”
DAVID, on behalf of the older generation, replies “We were innocent and poor.
Nobody noticed the Earth was dying”.

They come together in the chorus:
“Global warming - Depletes my world - Ecological collapse
Stolen my future – you pollute my home – how do you pay for that?
Greenhouse gases – rising seas; Oceans in crisis - Extinction of species; Stolen our future.
Polluted our home.
We’re eco-warriors …. and we’re not alone”

4. If Zach could see the Cherry tree– All of nature is there for all of us, while we are busy counting our ‘cherries’. In any event, we need to confront our spiritual reality; ‘eternity’ is now, and it exists alongside the current reality.

Staying Home– While they were in the studio finalising the EP, Cole and David couldn’t resist putting a LIVE track on the EP, which in a way corresponds with the themes of self-reliance and practical non-consumption - a lockdown bonus track. The new reality?
