We knew that, like preceding Diablo installations, Diablo 4 will get expansions aside from the base game. In a brand new interview with Australian gambling website Ausgamers, Game Director Luis Barriga and Art Director John Mueller, the duo talked about the debut of Lilith and the way the team is treating her, instead of Diablo, as a crucial role in the very first part of a big story that the team intends to tell for a lengthier period of time.

"After we saw the art we were motivated, [Lilith] was a personality that we can build a story around," Game Director Luis Barriga told Ausgamer. "What we love about Sanctuary is that we have already planted these seeds. There is a backstory found in lore novels and books, so we decided to look in the creation myth. We felt that we have fought Diablo earlier, and Diablo consistently comes back -- soit was a situation of, what other bullets do we have on the table lying around."

According to Art Director John Mueller, there's are plenty of known and new characters which could be introduced to Diablo 4 in the future, thereby teasing future expansions that revolve around characters and antagonists. "Diablo IV is like the first chapter of a book," the art director said. "we would like to tell a big story and we want to inform it, hopefully, for a lengthy time. Fixing this such as the first chapter of a publication and Lilith as a role in this story, it feels great knowing that there are all these other characters that could return later on. Or, new characters that we have not seen previously."

"Additionally, it changes the formula up," he added, thereby noting the game's main villain, Diablo, has not been banished for eternity. "In Reaper of Souls if you go up against Diablo, after playing to maximum level - it is a battle that is almost like a just like a minor speed bump. Malthael became the boss. It's also, what should we don't bring him back right away? And instead, take the time to explore a few of these other characters first."
